Hart House Theatre is often referred to as the cradle of Canadian Theatre. Opening in November 1919, the Art Deco theatre on the University of Toronto's St. George campus quickly became a leader in the Canadian "Little Theatre" movement of the 1920s and 1930s. Hart House Theatre cultivated and featured some of the country's finest actors, directors, playwrights and designers of the Pre-World War II era, including Raymond Massey, Dora Mavor Moore, Lloyd Bochner, Lawren Harris, Arthur Lismer, Wayne and Shuster and Merrill Denison. After the war, Hart House Theatre, under the direction of Robert Gill, became an extracurricular student theatre and for twenty years turned out a new generation of stage professionals. William Hutt, Don Harron, Kate Reid, David Gardner, Arthur Hiller, Donald Sutherland, Norman Jewison and Lorne Michaels all got their start on the Hart House stage. This committee oversees many of the literary events that Hart House sponsors throughout the school year.

Membership was limited to male students, graduates, and faculty members until 1972, when women were admitted. He began in the area of residence and student life, after having worked in science research and some time abroad in the field of education. Prior to his leadership role at Hart House, he was Dean of Residence & Director of Student Life for Spaces & Experiences. Here, he oversaw the admissions, student services and residence life operations for Chestnut Residence, Graduate House, Chelsea Residence and Knox College. In this capacity, he gained vital experience in facilities management, capital planning, managing ancillary budgets, training and development, student support and working with his teams in the planning and delivery of programming activities and events. An active member of several University committees and governance bodies, including the International Student Experience Advisory Committee and the Positive Space Committee, David is also a lecturer in OISE’s Master of Education program.

The east windows are heavily leaded with a medley of pastel glass interspersed with clear glass painted with motifs. The upper gallery windows feature hand-painted caricatures of the scholars and eccentrics from the time of Hart House’s origins. We are pleased to continue to welcome students back to Hart House to fill the halls with their music. Drop in to play a piano in one of four locations within the building. Student players of all levels of training and ability are encouraged to lose themselves and revel in the act of making music. Even though the detail of the Gothic style is much simpler than the Romanesque style, it still has decorative stone and wood carvings inside and outside the building.

It is also a late collegiate Gothic building because of its late erection date, 1919. The building consists of four wings around a quadrangle with a four-peaked tower extended from the south west corner. Although Hart House appears to be of masonry construction, it is actually structural steel and precast concrete with grey sandstone cladding. On the south side of the building there is a line of miniature human head sculptures made out of stone near the top of the building. There are also stone lions and monkeys that are on the outside of the main doors one at each side. The arch braces on the flat roofs of the east hall ways have carved decorations on them.

While there was an early reluctance to include jazz in the music programs at Hart House, by the late 1950s regular jazz concerts had been initiated, and among the noted artists who subsequently appeared were Moe Koffman and Oscar Peterson. Sproatt’s showpiece, The Great Hall, occupies the east wing of the House. A gilded inscription of Milton’s Areopagitica, written in 1644 in defense of freedom of speech and thought, surrounds the 140-foot hall. The coats of arms of the Royal Family and degree-granting universities of the British Empire from 1919 sit below an enormous stained glass window on the south wall.
Since its inception, the Hart House Debating Club has played host to leaders in every field, including heads of state, senior Cabinet officials, filmmakers, business leaders, activists, poets, policymakers, and philanthropists. Some of its most notable speakers include John F. Kennedy, Christopher Hitchens, Adrienne Clarkson, Noam Chomsky, John Turner, Brian Mulroney, John Tory, Margaret Atwood, Bob Rae, Elizabeth May, Bill Graham, Andrew Coyne, Margaret MacMillan, and Atom Egoyan. It got its start before the First World War when Vincent Massey, a University College alumnus who would become U of T's chancellor and governor general, convinced his family to fund a building that would serve as a place for recreation and co-curricular activities. Organizational operations are run by a committee of nominated volunteer orchestra members. The majority of elements within Hart House hint at the Perpendicular style of Gothic architecture and thus generally line up in a row. Arches and vaults are the dominant structural form, however, there are parts of the building that employ lintels to create open spaces with flat ceilings (such as the East Common Room).
Shields at the north end of the hall represent 74 universities of nations allied with Britain and Canada in 1919. Hart House was one of the earliest, and still is one of the most beautiful, student centres in the world. An historic site, Hart House has been referred to as “the finest example of Beaux Arts Gothic Revival in Canada.” Standing northwest of Queen’s Park, this distinguished building is the visual icon of the University of Toronto. Hart House is located south of Hoskins Avenue, between Queen’s Park Crescent and Tower Road. Commissioned in 1911 by Vincent Massey, Hart House was completed in 1919 and gifted to the University of Toronto as a gathering place for students. Hart House is a centre for experiential education outside the classroom at the University of Toronto. A new generation of students combined dramatic literature with practical theatre experience, and learned from and contributed to the vibrant Toronto theatre scene of the 1970s.
A name which just so happens to be identical to that of a 111-year-old student centre at the University of Toronto. Since 1976, the Hart House Orchestra has provided an opportunity for musical fellowship among members of the University of Toronto community with training and interest in performing symphonic works. The Hart House Art Collection is incredibly impressive, including works like A.Y. Jackson’s Georgian Bay, November, embracing mid-century movements pivotal to Canadian art.
His contributions and involvement at the University of Toronto are extensive, and his history with the House goes back over 25 years. He has been an active participant of the Hart House Board of Stewards for several years, and has had a strong connection to the House from his time as a U of T student to the present day. The first royal visitor to Hart House was Prince Edward, Prince of Wales, who played squash with students there in 1924. In 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth toured the campus and lunched at Hart House.[25] Elizabeth II made the first of several visits as a princess in 1951. On an annual basis the orchestra runs two concerto competitions, one internal (open to its membership) and one external (open to the community). The winning soloists perform with the orchestra, usually in the following season.
Beginning in 2010, students in the Faculty of Music Consort have used them in rehearsals which are often open to the public. The collection of six viols is on permanent display in a glass case in the Gallery Grill restaurant on the second floor of Hart House. Each one was made by a different luthier, with the earliest one from c. Distinguished architect Henry Sproatt designed Hart House in the Collegiate Gothic style using the finest of materials.
Rohinton Mistry, Camilla Gibb, Lynn Crosbie and similarly notable names in Canadian literature have been published in the HHR. The review also hosts lecture and reading events that feature established and emerging figures in Canadian literature and publishing. In addition to its regular exhibitions, the gallery houses an art collection that is valued at over CDN $10 million. Hart House is an example of Gothic Revival architecture as it is asymmetrical with pointed arches and windows, extensive ornamentation, steeply pitched roofs and a tall tower.
